We believe in farming our salmon out in the elements, in conditions that replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. It's what makes our salmon 'Scottish'.
Farming in the marine environment isn't without its challenges, however.
Sea lice, for example, is a parasite that occurs naturally in seawater and likes to attach itself to fish, particularly wild and farmed salmon.
While we can't stop sea lice occurring, we are investing millions in innovative new ways to control it. Everything from protecting our pens with anti-sea lice shields and farming our own cleaner fish which eat the parasite without causing harm to the salmon, to co-funding Thermolicer technology which bathes the salmon in such a way as to dislodge and catch sea lice.
All of which are also helping reduce the need for veterinary medicines.
