Antibiotics

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – where bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites become resistant to a medicine that was previously used successfully to treat it – is considered one of the biggest issues facing global health today.

Whilst this resistance can occur naturally, it’s thought that over-reliance on antibiotics in human and animal health could be adding to the problem.

As such, medical and veterinary professionals around the world have been tasked with reducing usage wherever possible.

RUMA (Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance) set a goal in 2016 of 5mg antibiotic active substance per kg of salmon produced. This compares to a target of 25mg/kg for poultry meat (broilers) and 99mg/kg for pigs.

Scottish Sea Farms has been working proactively to reduce its use of antibiotics for several years.

Reflective of this, 2022 saw us go beyond the RUMA target of 5mg/kg to achieve just 1.43mg/kg usage, administered via a single treatment.

How have we achieved this ‘low to zero’ usage?

  • By investing in a new biosecure hatchery which has helped minimise the incidence of infections before fish are big enough to be vaccinated
  • By introducing new husbandry protocols on our marine farms
  • And by taking a holistic approach to fish health and welfare, with vets actively involved throughout the growing cycle.

Zero medicinal residue

Testament to our drive to reduce the use of veterinary medicines, and our responsible use of those medicines that are administered, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate surveillance programme has consistently detected no medicinal residue in our salmon destined for market.
